The Body Keeps the Score — What That Actually Means for Inner Child Healing
You know you're safe. Your body hasn't gotten that memo yet. Here's what 'the body keeps the score' actually looks like day-to-day — and what it means for healing your inner child.
The Body Keeps the Score — What That Actually Means for Inner Child Healing
You know you're safe.
Logically. Intellectually. You've said it to yourself a hundred times: That was then. This is now. The person who hurt me isn't here.
And still — you're in a conversation and your chest has gone tight. Someone uses a certain tone and your whole body shifts into alert before you've consciously processed a single thing they said. You watch something on TV and you're crying before you even understand why. Or the opposite: something clearly painful happens and you feel nothing — a flat, locked blankness where your feelings should be.
That's not a failure of understanding. That's not weakness. That's what it looks like when the body keeps the score.
What Van der Kolk Was Actually Saying
In the 1990s, a psychiatrist named Bessel van der Kolk began documenting something that didn't fit the conventional model of trauma: his patients who had experienced overwhelming events didn't just remember them. They re-experienced them — in their bodies, not just their memories.
Muscles would tense. Heart rates would spike. The body would respond to a smell, a sound, a tone of voice as if the original event were happening right now. The event was over — sometimes decades over — but the body was keeping its own separate record. And that record didn't know how much time had passed.
Van der Kolk eventually wrote The Body Keeps the Score, and what he was describing is something trauma survivors have always known from the inside.
I'm not a clinician. I'm someone who lived this. When I first encountered the idea that my body was keeping its own traumatic record, completely independent of my conscious memory or understanding, it was one of the most relieving things I had ever heard. Because it meant I wasn't making it up. I wasn't choosing to still be affected by something that should have been over. My body was doing something real — something with a name.
What This Looks Like Day-to-Day
The abstract idea of "the body keeps the score" doesn't fully capture what it actually feels like to live inside it. Let me make it concrete.
Startling too easily. Someone walks up behind you and your heart is pounding before you've turned around. The reaction is way out of proportion to what actually happened — and you feel faintly embarrassed, like you should be able to control it.
Crying without knowing why. A song comes on. A scene in a show lands somewhere unexpected. Something that "shouldn't" hit that hard — and you're undone before you understand where it came from.
Not being able to cry at all. The opposite: something clearly sad, clearly painful, and you feel nothing. Not because you don't care. Because somewhere along the way your body learned that feeling was dangerous, and it locked the door.
Muscle bracing. Shoulders that never fully drop. A jaw that aches in the morning. A stomach that stays perpetually clenched. Tension you carry as if it's just who you are — not realizing it's the body maintaining a constant state of readiness.
Holding your breath. You catch yourself mid-breath, holding without realizing it. Or breathing shallowly, high in the chest, the kind of breath a body takes when it's waiting for something bad.
Physical symptoms with no clear explanation. The headaches that worsen under emotional stress. The back that goes out right when everything piles up. The stomach that knots before certain conversations, before you've even registered that you're anxious.
None of this is in your imagination. This is your body keeping record.
Why You Can't Just Think Your Way Out
Here's the piece that took me the longest to understand — and that I wish someone had explained to me early on.
The body's survival responses are faster than thought. By the time your conscious mind is even aware that something is happening, the nervous system has already responded. The chest is already tight. The breath is already shallow. The body is already in protection mode.
So when you're in that state — braced, triggered, flooded — you cannot reason yourself out of it. Not because you're being irrational. Because logic doesn't have access to the nervous system's alarm switch. Only the body does.
This is why insight alone doesn't shift things the way we hope. You can understand everything about your trauma history — every pattern, every origin, every reason you respond the way you do — and your body can still not believe a word of it.
Your inner child doesn't care about your intellectual understanding. They care about whether they feel safe in this body, right now. They live in the nervous system, not the thinking brain.
To reach them, you have to come into the body.
EFT Tapping Script: The Gap Between Mind and Body
This script is for when you know something with your mind — and your body hasn't caught up.
Setup Statements — tap the karate chop point, 3 times, varied:
- "Even though my mind knows I'm safe but my body hasn't gotten that message, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
- "Even though there's a real gap between what I understand and what I feel in my body — and I don't know how to close it — I choose to love and accept myself completely."
- "Even though I keep trying to think my way through what my body is holding, and it's not working, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
Round 1 — Acknowledge:
- Eyebrow: My mind knows I'm safe. My body doesn't believe it.
- Side of eye: There's a real gap between what I understand and what I feel
- Under eye: I'm still bracing. Still holding. Still waiting for something bad.
- Under nose: Even though the threat is in the past, my body responds like it's now
- Chin: I can't think my way out of what my body is holding
- Collarbone: The body keeps its own score — separate from my memory, separate from my mind
- Under arm: All of this that my body has been carrying
- Top of head: The disconnect between what I know and what my body believes
Round 2 — Soften:
- Eyebrow: My body learned to keep score because it had to
- Side of eye: It was trying to protect me — keeping the memory alive so I wouldn't be caught off guard
- Under eye: That was good, loyal work — even when it's exhausting
- Under nose: And it doesn't have to do that job alone anymore
- Chin: Healing happens here — in the body, not just the mind
- Collarbone: I don't have to force the gap to close — I can start working at the body level
- Under arm: My inner child lives in this body. I can begin to come home to them here.
- Top of head: The body can learn new things — slowly, safely, with help
Round 3 — Truth:
- Eyebrow: I am safe right now. My body is starting to believe it.
- Side of eye: The score my body has been keeping doesn't have to stay fixed
- Under eye: I can work at the level where healing actually happens
- Under nose: My mind and body can begin to tell the same story
- Chin: I don't have to choose between understanding and feeling — I can have both
- Collarbone: My inner child can feel safe in this body
- Under arm: I am more than the record my body kept — I am also what comes next
- Top of head: I am here. I am learning. My body and I are catching up to the same truth.
After tapping, check in: is there any loosening? Any breath that became available? Any softening you weren't expecting? Even the smallest shift counts.
