How Do I Start Inner Child Healing?
You've read about it. You've googled it. Here's the actual first step — no therapist required, no "readiness" required. Just where you are, right now.
How Do I Start Inner Child Healing?
You've had the tab open for three days. You've read the articles. You've watched the videos. You've highlighted the book. You sat down with your journal, pen in hand, ready to finally begin — and then just stared at the blank page for ten minutes before quietly closing it.
This isn't resistance. This isn't you being difficult. This is what it feels like to be on the threshold of something real, not knowing which direction is forward.
So let me just tell you. Here is the actual first step.
You Don't Start by Going Deeper. You Start by Noticing.
The biggest misconception about inner child healing is that it begins with excavating your worst memories and finally feeling all the feelings you've been avoiding.
It doesn't. That's not the first step — and if you tried to do that cold, your nervous system would lock up immediately, which is probably why you've gotten stuck before.
The first step is much simpler: notice your reactions before you try to change them.
Not analyze them. Not fix them. Just notice.
The next time something triggers you — your stomach drops when someone goes quiet, your chest tightens when you make a small mistake, you feel the urge to immediately apologize even when you did nothing wrong — pause. Not to figure it out. Just to name what's happening in your body.
There's a tightness in my chest. My shoulders are up by my ears. I feel really small right now.
That's it. That's the beginning of the work. Witnessing yourself without judgment is one of the most healing things you can do — and most people skip it because it feels too small to count.
It counts.
Grounding Comes Before Anything Else
Before you open old wounds, you need a way back to safety.
Grounding is what we call the practices that help your nervous system know where and when it is — present, not past. It's the foundation that makes everything else possible. Without it, doing deep inner child work can feel more like being swept away than moving forward.
Grounding can look like:
- Pressing your feet flat to the floor and feeling the pressure
- Holding something cold or textured — a stone, an ice cube, the arm of a chair
- Looking around the room and naming five things you can see
- Breathing slowly through your nose for a count of four, holding for four, out for six
None of these are magic. They are signals you send to your nervous system: We're here. We're okay. The past is the past.
You're not trying to feel good. You're just trying to feel present. That's the starting point.
Self-Compassion Is Not Optional — It's Prerequisite
I know that might feel like one more thing you have to learn before you can start. But hear me out.
Inner child healing asks you to show up for a part of yourself that learned very early that they were too much, not enough, hard to love, or a burden. That little one inside you — they don't need your analysis. They need your warmth.
If you walk into this work with the same critical voice you've always used on yourself — why can't you just figure this out, why is this so hard, what is wrong with you — that part of you is going to stay hidden. Because that's exactly what they learned to do to stay safe.
Self-compassion is what makes it safe to come out. It's the thing your inner child was waiting for someone to offer.
You can start practicing it before you feel it: This is hard. I'm doing the best I can. I deserve gentleness right now. Say it even when it feels hollow. Something in you will begin to soften.
The First Time You Do EFT Tapping
EFT — Emotional Freedom Technique — is the primary tool I use in this work, and it's the one I'd recommend starting with over journaling, over meditation, over almost anything else.
Here's why: it works directly with the nervous system, not just the thinking mind. You don't have to perfectly understand what you're healing for it to start working. You just have to be willing to say what's true while tapping on a sequence of points on your face and body.
The first round sounds like this — and I want you to say it out loud, even if it feels a little awkward:
"Even though I don't know how to start this healing, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
You say that three times, while tapping the side of your hand — the karate chop point — and then you move through the sequence: eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, under arm, top of head. You tap each point gently while saying something true about what you're feeling.
It can be as simple as: This overwhelm. I don't know where to start. I've been carrying this for so long.
The second round neutralizes: I'm beginning to figure this out. I'm open to healing.
The third round shifts: I am safe enough to begin. I am worthy of this work.
You don't have to believe the positive statements yet. That's not how this works. You're not trying to convince yourself. You're sending a signal to your nervous system — through the body, through the tapping points — that it's safe to start moving.
You Don't Need a Therapist to Begin
I want to say this clearly, because I spent years thinking I couldn't do this work on my own.
If you're dealing with severe trauma, active crisis, or a mental health condition that requires clinical care — please work with a licensed therapist. That is real, important support, and there is no shame in needing it.
But for many of us, what we need to begin is not a weekly appointment. It's a framework we can trust and a practice we can return to. You can do that at home, in your own time, at your own pace.
The inner child in you doesn't need perfect conditions. They need someone to show up for them. And that someone — the only one who can actually do this — is you.
You Don't Need to Be Ready
This is the most important thing I can tell you.
There is no version of you that will feel completely ready to do this work. The part of you that needs healing is exactly the part that learned, very early, that it wasn't safe to be seen. That part will always have a reason to wait.
You start where you are. With the tightness in your chest and the journal you haven't opened. With the googling at midnight and the sense that something underneath still needs attention.
You start with: I notice I feel something. I'm going to be gentle with myself about it.
That's the door. You've already been standing in front of it.
