She Introduced Herself to My Therapist Before She Introduced Herself to Me

A part of you can show up in a therapy session before you even know she exists. Here's what it can look like when a younger inner child part surfaces for the first time — and what it means.

It was a fifty-minute session. Standard length. You'd been working with your therapist long enough that you thought you knew what to expect from your time together.

What you don't know is what happened in the first forty of those fifty minutes, because you weren't there for them.

Your body was in the room. Your body was in the chair. But somewhere early in the session, something shifted — and you were no longer fully in it. You were watching from somewhere behind the couch. Floating backwards. Not drifting the way you drift toward sleep — this was different. You were moving away and getting stuck there. Unable to reach back in. Watching the session happen like it was slightly behind glass.

People describe heaven as bright and white, and you've heard it spoken of like something warm and welcoming. What was happening had that quality of brightness — but it wasn't welcoming. It was blinding. Painful in a way you couldn't locate. You knew you were still on earth, still in the same room. Just not quite in your body. The light was wrong. Too much of it. Too close.

There was tunnel vision. Blinders, almost — like the edges of your sight had been cut away and you could only see what was directly in front of you. You could see the session happening. You could not fully hear it. You were a witness to yourself, locked out.

Then: a snap. Dazed. Confused. And your therapist's voice coming through clearly for the first time, saying: we have ten minutes left.

Ten minutes left. Of fifty.

You didn't know what had happened to the other forty.

Your therapist looked at you differently in that moment. There was something new in their expression. Curious, maybe. Like they'd just encountered something they hadn't met before.

They said: I feel like I just met a new client in this room.

A part of you had shown up. A younger part. A part that had been there the whole time, inside you, waiting — and had finally surfaced in a space that felt safe enough to emerge. Your therapist met her before you did. They learned she existed before you did.

You were the last to know.

There is something both devastating and tender about that. A part of you that had been so alone, so unacknowledged, that the first safe space she found — she filled it completely. She didn't wait for an introduction. She simply came forward.

If you've experienced something similar — time missing, sessions you don't remember, moments of watching yourself from a distance — this is what that can sometimes mean. A younger part stepping forward. Not a sign that something is terribly wrong with you. A sign that something in you has been waiting a long time to be known.

Try This: If you've ever come back to a moment and not known how much time had passed — say: "I didn't know you were there. I'm glad you're here now."
