Why You're Always Tired (When Trauma Lives in Your Body)

It's not laziness. It's not weakness. It's what happens when the nervous system runs on chronic activation for years — and why trauma fatigue is one of the most misunderstood costs of unhealed childhood wounds.

Why You're Always Tired (When Trauma Lives in Your Body)

You slept. Eight hours, maybe more. And you woke up already depleted.

Not groggy — depleted. A heaviness in the bones that isn't about last night. The kind of tired that a good night's sleep doesn't fix, that a long weekend doesn't touch. The kind that lives underneath everything, that you carry into every morning like a weight you can't set down.

You've probably tried to explain it. Thyroid. Diet. Schedule. Iron deficiency. You've gone to bed earlier, taken vitamins, cut out caffeine. Some things helped a little. Nothing made it stop.

This is worth naming clearly: what you might be experiencing isn't a lifestyle problem. It's a physiological cost. It's what happens when the nervous system has been living in a state of chronic activation — when the body has been defending and holding and staying ready for so long that it doesn't know how to stop.

Your Body Is Doing Expensive Work

Most people don't fully understand how metabolically expensive hypervigilance is.

Your nervous system, when it's in survival mode — scanning for threats, maintaining readiness, holding muscle tension, staying one step ahead of what might go wrong — is using real physiological resources. Constantly. Without a break.

Think about what your body does in fight-or-flight: heart rate increases, stress hormones flood your system, muscles receive extra blood flow, digestion slows, immune function gets deprioritized. This is designed to be a short-term emergency response. It is not designed to run all day, every day, for years.

When you grew up in a home where you were never quite safe — where the emotional temperature was unpredictable, where you had to stay alert to survive — your nervous system learned to run the emergency response as a baseline. Not because anything is wrong with you. Because that's what the environment required.

You have been in emergency mode for a long time. And emergency mode is exhausting.

Living in a Defended Body

Living in a defended body is work. Real, physical, energy-consuming work.

The constant muscle bracing that never fully releases. The scanning of every room, every conversation, every silence for signals. The anticipatory anxiety running a constant background process: what's about to go wrong? What do I need to prepare for? What am I missing?

Every one of those processes has a cost. Every one is pulling from a pool of energy your body also needs for digestion, immune function, cell repair, hormonal regulation, sleep quality.

This is why you can sleep eight hours and wake up already tired. Your nervous system was working while you slept. It never got the signal that it was safe to rest.

This is not a character flaw. This is not laziness. This is not depression — though it can look like it, and they can co-occur. This is your body paying the price for surviving something it should never have had to carry.

Elijah Under the Juniper Tree

There's a story in 1 Kings 19 that I keep coming back to when I'm in the bone-tired.

Elijah — the prophet, the miracle-worker, the man who called down fire — collapses under a juniper tree and tells God he wants to die. It is enough, he says. Take my life.

What happened before this? Elijah had been in sustained spiritual battle, physical exertion, and emotional intensity. He had just come through the biggest confrontation of his ministry. He was depleted in every way a person can be depleted.

And what did God send? Not a sermon. Not a rebuke. Not a word about getting it together.

An angel. And bread. And water. Arise and eat; the journey is too great for you.

Twice. God came back twice — because one round of rest wasn't enough.

God's response to Elijah's bone-deep exhaustion was: rest and nourishment. Before the next assignment. Before any lesson. Because the body needed it. Because even the prophet could not go further on empty.

If God tended an exhausted body before asking anything more of it, yours deserves the same.

EFT Tapping Script: When You're Too Tired to Function

This script is for the bone-level tiredness — the kind that sleep doesn't fix.

Setup Statements — tap the karate chop point, 3 times, varied:

  • "Even though I'm so tired I can barely function — and rest doesn't seem to touch it — I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
  • "Even though my body is depleted in a way I can't fully explain, and I'm exhausted down to my bones, I choose to accept myself exactly where I am."
  • "Even though I've been tired for so long I can't remember what it feels like not to be, I deeply and completely love and accept myself — and I'm willing to understand why."

Round 1 — Acknowledge:

  • Eyebrow: I'm so tired
  • Side of eye: Bone-tired, soul-tired — the kind that sleep doesn't fix
  • Under eye: I've been running on empty for so long I don't know what full feels like
  • Under nose: My body is carrying so much. It's been carrying it for years.
  • Chin: The hypervigilance. The bracing. The constant scanning that never shuts off.
  • Collarbone: Even at night. Even when I'm supposed to be resting.
  • Under arm: My nervous system has been doing expensive work for a very long time
  • Top of head: And my body is paying the cost of it

Round 2 — Soften:

  • Eyebrow: This exhaustion isn't weakness — it's the bill for surviving
  • Side of eye: My nervous system learned to stay on because staying on meant staying safe
  • Under eye: That was the only option I had then
  • Under nose: But I have more options now. I can begin to teach my body a different way.
  • Chin: Rest is not laziness — it's what healing requires
  • Collarbone: My body needs care, not criticism
  • Under arm: I can begin to give it permission to settle
  • Top of head: The journey ahead needs a rested version of me — and that's allowed

Round 3 — Truth:

  • Eyebrow: My body deserves rest
  • Side of eye: Not rest I earn — rest I receive because I am a person who needs it
  • Under eye: The chronic activation is not permanent. The nervous system can learn to settle.
  • Under nose: I am allowed to need help with this
  • Chin: Rest is part of healing, not a distraction from it
  • Collarbone: God tended Elijah's exhausted body — and I am allowed to tend mine
  • Under arm: I am not too tired to heal. I am healing by learning to rest.
  • Top of head: My body is safe to let down its guard. The watch is over.

After tapping, if there is any possibility of it: rest. Even five minutes horizontal. Even one slow breath where you let your shoulders actually drop.
