When Your Body Is Speaking and Nobody's Listening
Unexplained nausea, chronic pain with no diagnosis, fatigue that sleep doesn't fix — your body isn't making it up. It's keeping the record of what your mind has been protected from.
You carried peppermint oil mints with you everywhere for a year. No dyes — that was important, for some reason you couldn't fully articulate. Just the mints, always within reach, because the nausea could hit at any time and without any warning you could track. Not after eating something wrong. Not at a predictable moment in the day. Just — suddenly, overwhelmingly, for no physical reason that anyone could find.
Tests came back with nothing.
There were also the pains between your shoulder blades — a sharp, specific ache with no injury to explain it. Or a stitch in the same location where, as a kid, there had been an old wound. Decades between those two events. And yet your body knew exactly where that wound had been.
You didn't understand what was happening for a long time. You knew the symptoms were real — you were living in them. But they were invisible from the outside. No diagnosis. No explanation. Just a body that kept producing sensations that had no apparent origin and no apparent cure.
What you know now, or what you're beginning to understand: the body keeps records. Somatic memory is real — the nervous system encodes experiences at a physical level, in the tissue, in the sensation, in the location of old wounds. The mind can protect itself from traumatic memories. It can lock them away, blur them, fragment them until they're inaccessible. But the body doesn't forget. It keeps a record in the only language it has.
You only had emotions and no visuals to go off of regarding trauma memories. That's what it can be like for a long time — body responses to events you couldn't access as memories. Your body remembered what your mind had protected you from. You would feel dread, or grief, or terror, with no image attached. No story. Just the feeling in your body and nothing to anchor it to.
The fatigue was its own category. Near-narcoleptic, at times — especially after being triggered. Not tired, exactly. Collapsed. This isn't the kind of tired that sleep fixes. It's the nervous system's freeze and shutdown response — the deepest branch of the threat-response system, the one that goes under when fight and flight aren't available.
None of this showed on tests. From the outside, there was nothing to see.
If you've carried symptoms that no one could find a cause for — you were not making it up. You are not hypochondriac. You are not dramatic. Your body is doing what bodies do: it is keeping the record.
Try This: Place one hand over the area of unexplained sensation. Don't try to explain it. Say: "I hear you. You're not making this up."
