What Is EFT Tapping for Inner Child Healing?
The inner child doesn't live in your head. They live in your body.
They live in the tightening in your chest when someone raises their voice. In the way your throat closes before you ask for what you need. In the sudden smallness that comes when someone looks at you a certain way. In the exhaustion of bracing for things that haven't happened yet.
That's why talking about your childhood — as helpful as it can be — often isn't enough on its own. Talk reaches the mind. But the inner child's wounds are held somewhere deeper, in the nervous system, in the body's memory of what happened before you had the words to name it.
EFT Tapping reaches that place.
If You're New to EFT
If you haven't heard of EFT Tapping before, or if you want a solid foundation in what it is and how it works, start with What Is EFT Tapping? before continuing here. That post covers the basics — the points, the method, the research, and why it works. This post builds on that foundation specifically for inner child healing work.
Why EFT Works So Well for Inner Child Wounds
The inner child's wounds are not primarily intellectual. They're somatic — stored in the nervous system, in the body's activation patterns, in the sensations and reflexes that fire before the thinking brain has time to weigh in.
A child who learned that love was conditional doesn't just hold a thought: I have to earn love. They hold a feeling in their chest. A particular quality of bracing. A way of being in the world that is organized around that belief at the body level.
This is why EFT works specifically well for this kind of healing:
It works directly with the body's stress response. When you tap on the acupressure points while holding a painful belief or memory, you're sending a calming signal to the amygdala — the brain's threat detection center — at the same time you're acknowledging the pain. The body receives both at once: this is real, AND it is safe.
It uses dual activation. Tapping while holding a painful memory or belief creates what researchers call dual activation — you're simultaneously in the distress and in the present-moment safety of the tapping. This is why the emotional charge on memories can shift, sometimes quite quickly. The nervous system is receiving a different signal than the one the memory carried.
It doesn't require "figuring it out." You don't have to understand why you feel the way you feel. You don't have to trace the wound back to its origin and narrate it in full. You just have to be present with the feeling while you tap. The body does the rest.

It's gentle enough to use on your own. One of the most important things for inner child healing is that support is available in the moment — not just during a weekly session. EFT can be used at home, between sessions, in the middle of a hard day, right after a triggering conversation. It meets you where you are.
How to Use EFT Specifically for Inner Child Healing
Here is the method used in Becoming & Beloved's approach:
Start with the inner child's core belief. Before you tap, identify what the inner child believes — not what you know to be true now, but the belief that was formed in the wound. Some examples:
- I am not wanted.
- I am too much.
- I am not safe.
- I have to earn love.
- I am fundamentally broken.
- There is something wrong with me.
Choose the one that carries the most charge right now. The one that still lands somewhere in your body when you say it.
Create your setup statements. Tap on the karate-chop point (the fleshy side of your hand) while repeating a setup statement three times. Vary the wording slightly each time to find what resonates:
"Even though a part of me still believes I'm not wanted, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
"Even though little me learned that they weren't wanted, I love and accept myself anyway."
"Even though some part of me is still carrying this belief, I'm willing to love and accept the child who learned it."
You don't have to fully mean the second half yet. Say it anyway. It opens a door.
Tap through the 8 points. Using two fingers, tap gently 5–7 times on each point in order:
- Eyebrow (inner edge)
- Side of eye (outer corner)
- Under eye (on the orbital bone)
- Under nose
- Chin (between lower lip and chin)
- Collarbone (just below the notch at the base of your throat)
- Under arm (about 4 inches below the armpit)
- Top of head
Do at least 3 rounds. For inner child work especially, three rounds create a gentle arc:
- Round 1 — Negative: Stay with the truth of the wound. Name what's real. "Still carrying this belief... this old, heavy thing... the little one who learned this..."
- Round 2 — Neutral: Soften without forcing. "Beginning to wonder if this was ever actually true... willing to be curious about this... something might be shifting..."
- Round 3 — Moving toward truth: Let in what's actually true. "That child was never actually unwanted by God... they were failed by people, not abandoned by love... I'm allowed to consider that I was always worth loving..."
Check in between rounds. After each round, pause. Take a breath. Notice: where did the activation go? Is the charge higher, lower, or different? Did something surface — an emotion, a memory, a physical sensation — that wants attention? Follow what moves.
What EFT Can Help With in This Work
In the context of inner child healing, tapping is particularly useful for:
- Shame spirals — when the inner critic has you in a loop and you can't think your way out
- Triggered reactions — in the moment after something activated the old wound, before you respond from that activated place
- Grief that lives in the body — the heavy, wordless kind that doesn't seem to respond to processing it in your head
- The chronic belief that you are too much or not enough — working directly at the felt sense of the belief, not just the thought
- The moment after a fight — when the inner child is running the show and the adult hasn't found their footing yet
