What Is Somatic Healing? (And Why Your Body Might Still Be Living in the Past)
Your mind moved on. Your body didn't. Somatic healing is about finally letting the two catch up — here's what it means and how it works in real life.
What Is Somatic Healing? (And Why Your Body Might Still Be Living in the Past)
Your mind has moved on. You know that. You've processed, you've journaled, you've talked about it. But then someone raises their voice — not even at you, just nearby — and your chest tightens before you've registered a single thought. Your stomach drops. Your shoulders come up. Something in your body decided this was dangerous before your brain had a chance to weigh in.
That's not an overreaction. That's not a character flaw. That's a nervous system that learned, a long time ago, that it needed to protect you. And it got very, very good at its job.
Somatic healing is the work of helping your body catch up to where your mind already is.
What "Somatic" Actually Means
The word somatic just means "of the body." That's it. Somatic healing isn't mystical or complicated — it's the simple (not easy) process of including your physical body in your healing, not just your thoughts.
Most of us were taught that healing happens in the mind. You understand what happened, you work through your feelings about it, and you move on. And that's genuinely part of it. But for a lot of trauma survivors, understanding what happened and feeling safe in your body are two completely different things.
You can know, intellectually, that you are safe. And still not feel safe.
Somatic healing bridges that gap. It works with the physical signs — the tightness, the bracing, the freeze, the way your heart speeds up before you've consciously registered a threat — and it says: your body has been holding something. Let's help it set it down.
Why the Body Holds Trauma
Trauma isn't just a memory. It's a survival response that got interrupted.
When something overwhelming happens, your nervous system does what it's supposed to do: it mobilizes everything it has to protect you. Adrenaline, cortisol, muscle tension, heightened senses — your body is designed to fight, flee, or freeze depending on what gives you the best chance of survival.
But if you couldn't complete that response — if you were too small, too dependent, too trapped — the energy stays. The body remembers it as an unfinished loop.
Years later, your nervous system is still scanning for the threat. Still bracing. Still ready. Not because you're broken, but because your body is loyal. It's still trying to protect the version of you that needed protecting.

What Somatic Healing Looks Like in Practice
This is where it gets practical. Somatic healing doesn't require special equipment, a therapist's office, or years of study. It starts with noticing.
What does safety feel like in your body? What does anxiety feel like — where does it live? When you're triggered, where do you feel it first?
For some people, it's the chest. A kind of heaviness or tightness that doesn't match any obvious cause. For others it's the throat — a catching, a constriction, like something they can't say and can't swallow. For others it's total numbness. A going-away. A sense that they've stepped slightly outside themselves.
That last one — dissociation — is its own kind of body signal. It's the nervous system's way of saying this is too much. When the body has learned that feeling is dangerous, it stops letting you feel. Somatic healing is part of learning that you can feel — slowly, safely, in small doses — and survive it.
Some tools that support somatic healing:
- Slow, conscious breathing that activates the vagus nerve
- Grounding practices that bring you into the present moment through your senses
- Movement — gentle, intentional movement that tells the body it's safe to be here
- EFT Tapping, which works directly at the intersection of the nervous system and emotional memory
How Somatic Healing Connects to Inner Child Work
Your inner child isn't a metaphor. They're the part of you that learned, in childhood, how to read a room. How to become invisible. How to keep the peace. How to survive.
They learned all of this in their body before they had words for it. A tight stomach when the front door opened. A practiced stillness when voices got loud. A hypervigilance — always scanning, always watching, always trying to anticipate what came next — so finely tuned that it became your baseline.
Somatic healing gives you a way to reach that part of you. Not through analysis, but through the body they lived in. When you slow down and notice what's happening physically — and you respond with gentleness instead of pushing through — you're sending a new message. It's different now. You're safe here.
That's inner child healing at the body level.
EFT Tapping as a Somatic Tool
EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique) is one of the most accessible somatic healing tools available, and it's central to how I teach inner child work.
Tapping works by using your fingertips to apply gentle pressure to specific acupressure points on your face and body while you speak to what's actually happening — the fear, the belief, the feeling that you can't shake. The physical touch combined with your own words sends a direct signal to the amygdala (your brain's threat-detection center) that you are not in danger.
What makes it different from just thinking or journaling is that it meets your nervous system where it lives — in the body.

You Don't Have to Feel It All at Once
One of the most important things I can tell you about somatic healing is this: you don't have to dive in. In fact, please don't.
If your body has learned that feeling is unsafe, forcing yourself into intense emotional experiences can retraumatize rather than heal. The goal isn't to rip open old wounds — it's to create enough safety that old wounds can finally close.
Start small. Notice one physical sensation today without judging it. Ask yourself where do I feel this in my body? and just observe. That's enough. That's already healing.
Your body has been carrying this for a long time. It doesn't need you to push harder. It needs you to get quieter, and start listening.
