Why Healing Takes Longer Than You Expected
You've done the journaling, the therapy, the meditation. You're still reacting the same way. This isn't failure — it's how healing actually works. Here's why it takes longer than you think.
You've done the journaling. Pages and pages of it. You've cried in therapy, sometimes spectacularly. You've read every book, taken the course, listened to the podcast. You've meditated — or tried to. You've prayed. You've sat with discomfort you didn't know you could sit with.
And then something happens. Someone says the thing, or nothing happens at all, and you react the same way you always have. The same tightness. The same spiral. The same voice.
I'm doing everything right. Why am I still like this?
If you've sat with that question — especially when it has teeth, when it comes in the middle of the night or after a moment that felt like backsliding — this is for you.
Why the mind heals faster than the body
Here's the thing most healing frameworks don't emphasize enough: understanding is not the same as healing.
You can fully, intellectually understand that your hypervigilance comes from a childhood that wasn't safe — and still be hypervigilant. You can know, consciously, that the reaction you just had was disproportionate — and still have had it. You can understand every model, every framework, every concept about how trauma works — and still feel it living in your body.
That's not failure. That's how the nervous system works.
The mind can update quickly. You read something, something clicks, a pattern becomes visible. That can happen in an afternoon.
The nervous system doesn't work that way. It updates through repetition and through felt safety — not through insight alone. It learned what it learned through thousands of small experiences over years. And it changes the same way: through thousands of small experiences over time, of being met differently, of learning — slowly — that the threat is no longer present.
You're not slow. You're doing a kind of work the mind cannot shortcut.
What "doing the work" actually looks like in real time
Part of the frustration is that inner child healing doesn't feel like progress the way other kinds of learning do.
When you learn a skill, you can see yourself getting better. When you heal a nervous system wound, the progress is often invisible until suddenly it's not — until you realize that the thing that used to send you into a three-day spiral only took three hours this time. Until you notice you set a limit without apologizing for it. Until you catch the critical voice and don't believe it quite as automatically as you used to.
The healing is there. It's just not performing for you.
And in between those small moments of change, you're doing work that feels more like sitting than like progress: noticing, tolerating, returning to yourself. Letting the feeling move through rather than shutting it down or drowning in it. Showing up again the next day.
That is the work. The unglamorous, unspectacular, not-very-Instagrammable work of being with yourself, over and over, until the nervous system starts to believe something new.
The healing is not linear
There's a phrase in trauma work: two steps forward, one step back. It's true, but it undersells how disorienting the back steps feel.
Because when you backslide — when you react the old way after months of doing it differently, or when something strips away the progress you thought you'd made — it doesn't feel like one step back. It feels like you never moved at all. Like the work was an illusion.
It wasn't.
Healing isn't a straight line from wounded to whole. It's more like a spiral — you keep circling back to the same material, but you're higher up on the spiral than you were. You can see more. You recover faster. The same wound shows up but the grip is a little looser.
The fact that something still hurts doesn't mean you haven't healed. It means the wound is deep, and you're still in the middle of the work. Those are different things.
Slower is not the same as stuck
There is a version of "slow healing" that is actually avoidance — staying at the level of understanding without ever letting the body do the work, or using healing-adjacent activities (journaling, researching, reading) as a way to feel productive without actually feeling anything.
If that's you, you'll know it. There's a particular kind of busyness in spiritual and emotional bypassing.
But if you're doing the real thing — sitting with uncomfortable feelings, trying to stay present in your body, repeating the practices even when they don't feel like they're working — then slow doesn't mean stuck. It means thorough.
You are not behind. There is no schedule.
You are a nervous system that was shaped by real experiences, and you are being reshaped — carefully, gently, at the pace your system can actually integrate. That pace is not a failure. It is a mercy.
What sustainable healing actually looks like
I want to gently challenge the idea that you'll know you're healed when it stops hurting.
Sustainable healing looks more like this: the same things still exist, but your relationship to them changes. You feel the grief without it swallowing you. You notice the trigger without being hijacked by it. You have the reaction and then you come back to yourself — faster each time.
It looks like: being able to ask for help. Being able to say you're not okay. Being able to rest without guilt, say no without panic, receive love without waiting for the catch.
It looks like being you — more fully, more safely, with more room to breathe.
That's what you're moving toward. And the fact that it's taking time is not evidence that it won't happen. It's evidence that you are doing something real.
