Is My Inner Child Wounded?
A self-discovery checklist for adults who grew up too fast.
Read through each one. Check the boxes that feel familiar — even a little. You don’t have to be certain. If it lands, check it.
In Relationships
- You apologize before you've even done anything wrong.
- You feel responsible for other people's moods — if someone's upset, you assume it's because of you.
- You have a hard time saying no, even when you're exhausted, because you're afraid of what they'll think.
- You shrink yourself — your opinions, your needs, your volume — to make other people comfortable.
- You find yourself working hard to earn love instead of just receiving it.
- You feel a surge of panic when someone important to you goes quiet or pulls away, even briefly.
- You over-explain yourself in conversations, like you always need to justify why you feel the way you feel.
- You can sense when the energy in a room shifts, and your whole body goes on alert.
In Your Body
- Your body tightens when someone says "we need to talk."
- You freeze or go quiet when someone raises their voice — even slightly, even if it's not directed at you.
- You hold your breath when you're waiting to see how someone reacts to something you said or did.
- You feel physically exhausted in ways that don't make sense — like you've been running on high alert for years.
- Conflict makes your stomach drop, your chest tighten, or your hands go cold.
- You've learned to perform "fine" so well that people are surprised when you're not okay.
In Your Mind
- You feel a wave of shame after someone gives you constructive feedback, even when it was kind.
- You replay conversations for hours (or days), wondering if you said the wrong thing.
- Deep down, you believe you are too much — or not enough. Sometimes both at the same time.
- You find it hard to trust that good things will last, like you're always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
- You're quick to believe the worst about yourself, but slow to believe the good things people say about you.
- Rest feels dangerous — like you have to earn it before you're allowed to stop.
When You Make Mistakes
- A small mistake can send you into a spiral of shame that feels wildly out of proportion to what happened.
- You hold yourself to a standard you would never hold anyone you love.
- When something goes wrong, your first instinct is to blame yourself — even when it clearly wasn't your fault.
- You've heard "you're too sensitive" or "you're overreacting" so many times that you've stopped trusting your own feelings.
- Asking for help feels like admitting you're a burden.
If you checked several of these, you’re not broken — you’re carrying something that was never yours to carry. Inner child healing is how you start to set it down. You’re in the right place.
