What Is EFT Tapping for Kids? (And How It Heals Your Inner Child)

Somewhere inside you is a child who needed someone to sit with them and say: it makes sense that you feel this way. EFT tapping is one of the most powerful tools I've found for finally reaching that child — and giving them what they couldn't get then.

There's a younger version of you who went through something they didn't have the support to process.

Maybe they were scared and there was no one to sit with them. Maybe they were told their feelings were too much, or wrong, or inconvenient. Maybe something happened — something a child should never have to carry alone — and they had to carry it anyway, because there was no other option.

That child didn't disappear when you grew up. They're still in there, holding what they've been holding since it happened. Still waiting for someone to say: I see you. That was real. It makes sense that you feel that way.

EFT tapping — Emotional Freedom Techniques — is one of the most direct paths I've found to reaching that child. Not just to acknowledge what they carry, but to actually help the nervous system complete what it couldn't complete when they were small.

Two Ways EFT Tapping Works With Children

Before we go further, I want to acknowledge that "EFT tapping for kids" can mean two distinct things — and both are worth talking about.

EFT can be taught to and practiced by actual children. When a child has a safe, attuned caregiver or therapist guiding them, tapping can help them process big feelings in real time. Children take to it naturally — the physical rhythm of tapping, the permission to say what's hard out loud, the way it helps them move through emotional activation rather than getting stuck in it. If you have children in your life who carry anxiety, big emotions, or early trauma, tapping is a gentle and accessible tool worth exploring with them.

But the focus of this post is the other angle: using EFT to reach the inner child within you. The younger part of yourself who is still carrying wounds from a time when no one was doing this work with them. This is the heart of what we do in inner child healing, and tapping is one of the most powerful bridges I've found to get there.

How EFT Works With the Inner Child

EFT tapping works by stimulating acupressure points on the face and body while simultaneously giving voice to the emotional experience. When we combine physical input (the tapping) with verbal acknowledgment of what we're feeling, it sends a signal to the amygdala — the brain's threat center — that it's safe to come down. The nervous system hears, through the body: you don't have to stay in alarm.

For inner child healing, the tapping process does something specific: it allows us to speak the wound out loud — the belief the child formed, the feeling that was never allowed expression, the fear that's still running — while the body simultaneously receives a calming signal. We're not just thinking about the wound. We're meeting it in the body, where it actually lives.

This is why tapping is so effective for reaching inner child material that talk therapy alone doesn't always touch. You can intellectually understand your abandonment wound, your worthlessness wound, your powerlessness wound — and still feel them fire in your body like they're fresh. Tapping addresses the physiological layer, not just the cognitive one.

A Sample Tapping Script: The Child Who Learned They Were Too Much

Let's do a short tapping sequence together — using the wound belief that many people who grew up in emotionally dismissive homes carry: I am too much. My feelings are wrong. I need to make myself smaller.

Before we begin, rate how true that belief feels in your body right now on a scale of 0–10. Not just intellectually — where do you feel it, and how intense is it?

Setup Statements on the Karate Chop Point

Tap the side of your hand (the karate chop point, on the outer edge of your palm below the pinky) continuously as you say each statement aloud three times — with genuine variation, not rote repetition:

  1. Even though I learned early on that my feelings were too much for people around me, and part of me still believes that, I am open to being seen and held with compassion.

  2. Even though there's a little one inside me who learned to make herself smaller so the people she needed would stay, and she's still trying so hard to be the right size — I love her. I see her working.

  3. Even though my body still sometimes braces around this — even though this belief has roots I'm only beginning to understand — I'm willing to explore what it would feel like to take up the right amount of space.

Round 1 — Fully Acknowledge (Negative Round)

Moving through each tapping point — eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, under arm, top of head — say these phrases (or use them as a guide and speak what's most true for you):

  • Eyebrow: I was too much for them.
  • Side of eye: They couldn't hold what I was feeling.
  • Under eye: So I learned to hold it for them.
  • Under nose: I got very good at making myself smaller.
  • Chin: I've been small for a long time.
  • Collarbone: Part of me is still shrinking right now.
  • Under arm: That little one is still working so hard to be acceptable.
  • Top of head: I see how much she had to carry alone.

Round 2 — Soften (Neutral Round)

Another full round through the tapping points, beginning to introduce possibility without forcing a shift:

  • Eyebrow: What if my feelings weren't actually wrong?
  • Side of eye: What if she was never actually too much?
  • Under eye: What if she was exactly as much as she should have been?
  • Under nose: And the people around her just didn't have the capacity?
  • Chin: That would have been true — and it would have been theirs to carry, not hers.
  • Collarbone: I wonder if some part of me already knows this.
  • Under arm: I wonder if she's ready to set down even a little of this.
  • Top of head: She's been carrying it for so long.

Round 3 — Shift Toward What's True (Positive Round)

Final full round. This is where we offer the truth — not toxic positivity, but the real, grounded thing that the inner child needed someone to say:

  • Eyebrow: She deserved to have her feelings met.
  • Side of eye: She wasn't the problem. The lack of capacity was the problem.
  • Under eye: Her feelings made sense, every single time.
  • Under nose: And I'm here now.
  • Chin: I can be the one who says: that makes sense.
  • Collarbone: She doesn't have to earn her space.
  • Under arm: She was made by God with exactly the feelings she was given.
  • Top of head: She is beloved. She has always been beloved.

Take a breath. Check back in: where is that wound belief now on 0–10? Even a small shift is meaningful. This is the work.

Why the Inner Child Responds to Tapping

The inner child is not a metaphor exactly. They are a living part of the nervous system — a collection of early experiences, wound beliefs, survival strategies, and unmet needs that operate in the body as real patterns.

When we do tapping with the inner child in mind — speaking to their specific wounds, using language that meets them where they are, allowing the negative round to fully acknowledge before we move toward repair — something happens. The part of us that has been bracing starts to relax. Not because we talked them into it. Because the body received enough safety signals to begin to believe it was possible.

This is the work. It's simple and it's deep and it's ongoing.

You Were Made to Be Fully Met

You did not need to learn to be smaller. The child inside you was not too much. They were a child — with a child's enormous capacity for feeling, a child's complete dependence on the adults around them, a child's absolute need to be met — and they didn't receive what they needed.

That is not a reflection of their worth. It never was.

The healing is gentle. It's self-paced. It's real. And it starts with a single round of tapping toward the truth.
